However, an educational system which can support their independence in community living does not currently exist in Japan. We think there are not sufficient educational opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. In this paper, we examine the present situation and some problems of life-long learning activities for people with intellectual disabilities in Aomori Prefecture. By comparing participants who took part in life-long learning activities in the community with those who took part in special classes for young people of schools for handicapped children, differences in personal attributes, purpose of participation and personal development were discovered.
