However, educational systems which can support their independence within the community are currently almost non-existent in Japan.\n In Aomori prefecture, some life-long learning activities for people with intellectual disabilities are supported on a volunteer basis but have problems in unstable management, staff and funds. It is very difficult to guarantee the life-long learning of people with intellectual disabilities through these volunteer activities alone. In this paper, we consider the role of schools from research on special classes for the youth in schools for handicapped children in Aomori Prefecture.\n These special classes for youth have the same problems as volunteer activities. In addition, there are problems with the limitation of the kind of student that can participate, the contents of learning, teachers’ involvement, and cooperation within the community.
