A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect base materials regarding current nursing education institutions that will become the basis of a study of the history of nursing education. Institutions surveyed were all 18 nursing education institutions in Aomori prefecture. A request for cooperation was made, and approval obtained before the questionnaires were mailed. The collection rate was 100%; questionnaires were collected from 3 colleges and 2 nursing schools that offer a 3-year program, 5 nursing schools that offer a 2-year program, 2 institutions that offer a 5-year unified nurse training program, and 6 nursing schools that offer a practical nurse training program. Of those 18 institutions, 2 were established by Aomori prefecture; 3 by cities; and 13 by various corporations. The number of students enrolled each year was from 20 to 100. The practical nurse training program was 2 years in duration, and the nurse training program, including a 5-year unified program, was 3 to 5 years. Many institutions that offer a nurse training program were established between 1955 and 1974. Nursing colleges were newly established in 1999 or later, but most nursing education institutions have about a 40-year history. It is observed that while experiencing the effects of social conditions, such institutions have continued their operation until today by overcoming various milestones, such as changes in base organizations and the number of students enrolled, program reform, and reorganization. Furthermore, it became evident that such institutions are keeping archives related to nursing education in some way. In the future, the survey regarding the history of each nursing education institution as well as related archives will continue. |
