| 内容記述 | This paper tries to offer "alternative" concepts of volunteers/voluntary activities with special reference to Aomori Bengal Association, ABA, a voluntary group established in Aomori Prefecture. Volunteers are people who participate in establishing a new civil society through human networks, but they do not just work voluntarily for the public, they work without expecting economic gain. ABA supports an ongoing project which administers and manages a creche in a rural village in Chandra, Bankura District, West Bengal, India. The project was initiated by the Development Research Communication and Services Centre, DRCSC, an NGO which works for social development in rural villages in West Bengal, where minority groups live. DRCSC's approach to social development is based on the PRA (participatory rural appraisal) method advocated by R. Chambers, a researcher at the University of Sussex, Britain. An important key word for volunteers/voluntary activities and the social development approach is "participating." Participating does not only mean "to happen to stay there" or "to become a member," but "to take a vital role as an individual on one's own initiative" ABA perceives Aomori and Bengal as "peripheries" which are left behind in economic prosperity. Participating in development processes in Bengal as a DRCSC partner is as valuable as working to develop Aomori. | |||||||||||
